BFAS Cossack Entrenched Wagon Train

The wagon train consisted of light peasant wagons that were formed into rows. The wagon train was most vulnerable on the move, once it stopped (in defense), while fortified and set up in advantageous terrain, it became a fortress. The wagons were strengthened with soil or rocks, wheels were often tied together with chains and some earthworks were done. Such a fortified wagon train could only be defeated through a methodical and well-prepared siege. The wagon train was well equipped, at least by the standards of the Ukrainian steppe, with firearms and artillery, especially of small caliber, that was mounted on the wagons or positioned between the carts. An attack against the wagon train, as well as fighting inside it in the tangle of wagons, always brought huge losses in men and horses to the attacker.
