BFAS Tatar Rabble

Since the Tatar forces were levied from the general population, all segments of thepopulation, including those from the lowest social and economic levels went oncampaigns. These levies could not afford good horses, expensive equipment, and theirarms were often improvised. The poorest Tatars, dressed only in sheepskin jackets and underarmed, were called kazindji. Poor armament and lack of armor was characteristic of the impoverished masses of Tatars. Only a few had sabers or bows and many were armedonly with what they could find – flails, horse jaws on a pole, maces, spears. Such units had minimal combat quality but still could be used for auxiliary tasks.
